15. Venchi

Image
I look away for a moment and  another gelato shop pops up in Covent Garden. Venchi does chocolate and gelato so I had very high expectations.  First the veneer is lovely the place looks super shiny and new. Which is good way to start, the first thing I do is stare at the flavours because the boards are positioned so high up and at such a steep angle that they aren't tag easy to see. I eventually figured out is £3.50 for a single scoop, be warned it's not the most generous scoop for the price either.
What I do notice is that is little to no queue, OK its December but the area is heaving with people and no one is in this place not even for the chocolate. After some disappointingly cold and pretty much uninterested service I can eventually pay and order. As dark chocolate is the control flavour that what I get.
Not that I opted not to get two scoops at the last moment because by not I'm getting rather impatient.  I can report the 75% dark chocolate is fairly powerful, ther…

Teeth, urgh

While it's only 7 mins out of my day. Nothing bores me more then the thought of flossing and brushing my teeth before bed.

Yes, I'm in my 30s and should be grown up enough to not care. But just the thought has me comatose. Then your mouth gets icky by 10pm and you get off your bum and brush away and remember it's not so bad.

I've tried switching hands, listening to music and multitasking but still snoozefest. In the morning I think I'm too sleepy, so auto pilot takes over. Honestly I often get to work and I'm surprised I'm dressed.

However, the worse insult to injury is the dental hygienist.

Dear dental professionals, I have no idea why you want to look on people's mouths. OK we do indeed need you. But that does not mean I understand you.

So what prompted my latest angst. Well s couple of weeks ago, I was stuffing my face with some nostalgic fruit salads. For those of you unfamiliar with these, it's a chewy sweet from my childhood that …

14. Gelatorino

Image
I was finding it hard to locate more gelato shops but fear not I found one, Gelatorino in Covent Garden. Rushing to tasty delights after work may not be wise for this venue as they close fairly early compared to thier competitors. Thus when we arrived, we were curtly informed that we could eat our gelato outside provided we were fast. The place was deserted, but they didn't seem bothered about customer service. After what must of been too long debating, Jo (my willing accomplice) and I went for the exact same thing, dark chocolate and cherry ripple.

Now I must confess, I'd been back to Gelupo the week before so I'm judging this place by a very fresh high standard. Which isn't all that fair.

But life is full of bias and while my opinion my be tainted my taste buds are harder to sway.

So how did they do? Well, I can't say I was that thrilled. It was all OK. The cherry ripple was too sweet and just not that interesting and the dark chocolate wasn't chocolatey eno…

NHS needs our support more than ever

Image
I just got off the phone with my mum about her test results. She's awaiting surgery and needs some tests before a date can be confirmed.

Right now we don't know if its cancer but given the situation, the surgeon and nurse feel there is a high likelihood. Best operate now and deal with the illness fully.

How did we find out?

She went to a routine NHS colon screening check. One the NHS offers to people over a certain age to screen for bowel cancer. This is not a service that is mandatory. But thanks to this very screening the doctors and nurses we able to catch my mum's condition before she showed any out ward symptoms. They started treating her right away. A nurse has been checking up on my mum since.

We met with the nurse and surgeon last week to talk about what they found and the next steps.

I cannot praise the medical staff enough, they explained everything, answered our questions and immediately started booking the pre-surgery screenings.

Usually I'm rather private …

13. Gelateria 3BIS

Image
The silence is over, and it is OK, I've not been on a diet.
The summer is here and that means time for more gelato.
I had the pleasure of going for a Thames walk the other day with my friend Jo. While we may of had cake for dinner (it was scrumptious) I couldn't resist popping into the Gelateria 3BIS in London's famous Borough Market.

One of the best parts of this little shop is that it's open until 11pm, so there is no excuse not to give it a try. I used to go here when I worked in London Bridge, with the market buzz the queues could be rather long, but the staff are efficient and sort you out very fast. So if you do head down try a weekday evening after the main market has shut for the day. They have a decent amount of tables to sit at and enjoy your purchase and the river a hop away if you fancy a stroll.

On to the main event, I had a Kinder Bueno and Raspberry, not one of my best combination choices. Each worked well on their own but didn't really compliment e…
